Blind Driver back behind the Wheel

Dr Amit Patel was an emergency first response driver when he lost his sight back in 2013. He had more than his vision taken away from him, he also lost one of his greatest pleasures: his freedom to drive. In 2018, Amit contacted Toyota GB with a simple request: Help me drive again. So they did.

As the name suggests, Toyota Motor Europe’s research and development department initiated the 2018 Aygo programme by gathering feedback from existing owners of the second-generation model. The result of this extensive research identified three key focus areas for the development of the mid-lifecycle model change. Senior project manager Kristof Muylle identifies them for us: “Firstly, we wanted to ensure that Aygo maintained its best-in-class position in the A-segment for fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.

The Toyota Mirai has become the first hydrogen fuel cell electric car to drive the length of Britain from John O’Groats to Land’s End, in the process emitting nothing but a few litres of pure water along the way.

Toyota has announced its win of the Green Fleet Manufacturer at the Fleet News Awards, which shows “commitment” to improve environmental performance.

Presented at a ceremony in London this week, Toyota has said the honour reflects the company’s “commitment to constant improvement in the environmental performance not just of its vehicles, but every aspect of its worldwide business”.

The judges said: “Toyota’s commitment to environmental issues has been frequently dismissed over the years but the company was brave and stuck to its guns. It was the right thing to do.

The Metropolitan Police Service is set to team up with the Toyota Mirai to help create the world’s largest fleet of zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell electric police vehicles.

The first of 11 cars have been delivered to the Met with support from the FCHJU* grants programme and are equipped to work as both marked and unmarked vehicles for overt and covert response, as well as general purpose use.
